Everyones favourite content management system and blogging platform, wordpress, is on the verge of a major version release and the first beta is now available for download.
Wordpress 3.0 - New Features
There are many tweaks and improvements along with a merger between Wordpress standard and Wordpress MU (Multi User):
- Custom Menus - the menu system has been overhauled and the Woothemes menu system has been merged with the wordpress core to allow for easy creation of custom menus with page and category entries.
- Custom Post Types - wordpress now supports various post types by default without custom templates. The following are supported: post, quote, conversation, audio & video.
- New Default Theme - the default theme was beginning to look a little tired (dead even) and has now been replaced with the Twenty Ten theme.
- Theme Customisation - the control panel now allows for theme customisation with custom backgrounds, custom banners and logos.
There is also a whole host of improvements to the user interface and basic features.
Initial Thoughts
At first look it all seems very promising. The system now seems to be a much more viable option without installing or customising a theme. The user interface offers enough options for even basic users to put their own stamp on their blog and the menu system also improves the prospects for using the wordpress as your website CMS. The additional page types are also a great boon for bloggers and site earners in general.
All in all, if you are familiar with some of the better Web 2.0 wordpress themes then you wont find much new here but it is great to see these advanced features being rolled into the core. So, very promising. I will be playing some more over the next week and will come back with a more detailed review of Wordpress 3.0 Beta 1.
