What is Website Programming

Web programming falls under the broad web development umbrella and covers client side and server side scripting.

Client Side

Client side scripting covers programs that are executed by users web browser, therefore, the processing is happening on the client computer - hence client side. A website programmer specialising in client side scripting would work with languages including Javascript and VBScript.

Server Side

Server side scripting happens behind the scenes and when a user requests a web page a script running on the server will examine the request and generate a unique page based on the users input. This is known as dynamic web programming and a website programmer will usually be interacting with a database or building a page that is customised for the current user.

Tools of the Trade

There are many different languages web programmers may use but the most prevalent at the end of 2009 are ASP/ASP.net (Microsoft) and PHP (Open Source). There are also many other including Ruby (on Rails), Java Server Pages and Coldfusion that have a lesser prevalence.
