This information will then be picked up and over time other sites will link to you and your sites popularity will flourish. Think of it as being similar to academic citation - a paper that is well liked will be cited by many other sources.

Paid search results are known as PPC (Pay Per Click) and all of the big search engines run their own scheme. PPC works much like an auction, you choose your keywords, write your advert and then you bid for places and the highest bidder gets the best slot.
Truth be told, there is a little more going on and adverts that perform well (get clicked) can outrank higher bidders through performance power. Google wants your adverts clicked on, they get paid everytime someone clicks so an advert who is paying £1.00 per click and getting 50 clicks a day may outrank an advert that is paying £2.00 per click but only getting 10 clicks a day.

If your listing is marked as pending with a little yellow symbol next to it then it generally means that the Google Places system has flagged your listing for a manual review. You don't need to do anything and with time, given that there is nothing naughty or misleading about your listing, it will be reviewed and made live in time (4 to 8 weeks being the norm).
Why does your listing need a review?
